Villas in Mani
The residence complex in Mani, is located in an area of extreme natural beauty and architectural tradition, immediately resulting to a design approach respecting the idiosyncrasy of the region, the landscape and the Messinian architectural idiom. The overall aim set for the project was to produce of a contemporary yet genuine version of the experience of the place and its inhabitance.
The three residence units are dispersed along a communal path, which identifies with the longitudinal axis of the plot, starting from the main entrance, ending at an open-air structure which serves as an observation point and having a common square as its core. Ensuring the unobstructed view of the Messinian bay, the functional highlighting of the outdoor space, as far as both private and common action is concerned, and the harmonic relation with the ground and landscape have been some of the main parameters of the residences’ placement.
The residences are materialized as autonomous stone volumes, referring to the iconic monolithicity of the local traditional architecture, while morphological elements such as the distinct roofs, the arrangement and detailing of the openings or the extensive use of freestanding walls as elements of organization of space and composition of building units are an attempt of a reinterpretation of the local idiom and the identification of the specific character of the complex with a contemporary architectural intention.
